Question:
Are GCSE mocks just any plain old past-exam-paper ?

since they aren't official.
Doesn't that mean that you can go online and download a past paper and know all the answers for the mock, therefore you don't need to revise?

Your school normally makes up the mock exams by using questions from actual past papers(only a couple from any one year).

hope this helps :)

My school did a mix; they made up some mocks from scratch, they also mixed and matched questions from various past papers and then they did just take full past exam papers.

Normally they are the past paper that the people who actually took the real GCSE paper did (i.e. June 09) and they aren't usually available till after people have completed the mocks, for the exact reason that people think of cheating ;)

So you could downloading a past paper and learn the mark scheme, but you don't know which series they're gonna use so you'd have to learn several mark schemes just for 1 subject, let alone all 11 or however many you are doing.

Mocks are there to help you anyway, revise now and you have less to revise when it comes to the real thing. Plus there ARE still important as if you're applying for a 6th form college they look at your mock results since you won't have sat your exams by then.

Indeed, past papers are often used as Mocks, the idea being that the pupil gets an idea of what the real thing will be like. Thus they are not JUST past papers.

And if anybody merely downloads answers beforehand, he's doing himself no favours at all in the long run. Besides which, is he likely to be able to memorise the answers to ALL past papers and be able to regurgitate them on demand?

The Examination boards [AQA or whatver] have a huge database of looooads of quetsions. Each year they pick random questions for the exams. So yes some questions you will have seen before, some you wont have. Thats why in school before GCSE exams, you do LOOOADS of past paper tests right? And it feels really boring cos most the quetsions are the same? Yeah well, i was the same, but when i went into the exam, i think nearly ALL the quetsions i had seen before! :P

Yes, that's true. However, you could do with the practice for your real exams as you won't be able to get the same paper for your June exams. I'd suggest you revise and get an honest grade, and then you can pinpoint exactly what you need to focus on for June. It's much more beneficial for you in the long run. Good luck.

Not if the ones from June that year are used because they're usually published around mid January to everyone, which is usually after mock exams

No they are official, The official mock exam will be the paper that was sat last year. If you are sitting a real exam in June 2010 then your mock will be from June 2009. These papers are NOT available online!! Not that you were considering cheating... :(
