Okay, so my academic (which is the highest option, btw) grade nine english class mid-terms report card comment i feel was unfair.
it said:
_______ demonstrates a reasonable understanding of texts read. She needs to improve response to questions based on text. _______ should review content on a regular basis.

In this class, I have an 86, when the class average is a 73. Nothing in this comment was positive, but i feel that I have a good mark. Does this seem fair to you?

"Nothing in this comment was positive."

Wrong. Please reread the first sentence:

"...demonstrates a REASONABLE understanding of texts read."

It seems your teacher was valid in assessing a problem in your understanding of reading. It is reasonable but not perfect, particularly in the area of questions based on the text. An 86% does not demonstrate complete mastery of the course, regardless of the grades of other students. Have you even checked what their comments were? Perhaps they were even "worse" than yours.

To answer your question, yes, I believe that comment was perfectly fair. I don't see why you would be upset if your teacher is finding your weaknesses and trying to help you. You should be glad that your teacher is telling you how to improve yourself instead of ignoring your grades because they simply happen to be better than the mediocre class percentage.

The teacher isn't being unfair. Based on what s/he wrote, it sounds like you're doing a good job when you read, but when you respond, you should write more, or go deeper/more sophisticated with your answers to match the understanding you have. The second part of it suggests that as time goes by, you're letting material you learned in prior units start to fade, which is a very common thing for students to do, but your teacher thinks you're capable of far more. The teacher basically recognizes that you have potential, and that you've used that potential to maintain a decent grade in the class, but you could do better if you develop that potential, going from good to great.

I think it's fair- because teacher's want all their students to improve, no matter what grade they currently have. I think that the students with a 73 or below probably got way worse comments. But be proud of yourself for the 86!

The 86 was the pat on the back. The comments are an opportunity for constructive criticism. Perhaps the teacher felt that you were capable of exceeding your own expectations.

I had a comment on my report card once. I felt embarrassed at first but it was just my teacher's comment. It was their opinion so you can't change it. Just take it in and next time if you don't like what your teacher said to you, talk to her.

Those are rated by two separate sources, grades do not always reflect performance, grades are standard and the reviews are written by teachers, maybe he/she has a problem with you or noticed something.

Just b/c you have the higher grade in the class doesn't mean there isn't room for you to improve. Yes it was fair, don't try to argue it or justify it, just take it and learn from it.
