Do I need to have had any driving lessons before taking my theory test?

I'm about to start my driving lessons within the next couple of weeks, but I really want to take my theory test to get it out of the way. Considering my sister has bought me an official theory test/hazard perception CD, can I book and take my test before actually starting my lessons?

Yes you can but your theory certificate only lasts for 2 years so be sure you'll be able to sit and pass your driving practical in this time. It is probably more beneficial if you take a few practical lessons before your theory so that you can see the theory in action to help you remember and understand it. good luck!

Well you could....but if you fail you'll have to fork out another £40 or however much it is.

A few lessons in, your instructor will tell you when he wants you to take the theory test. He'll teach you things you need to know in the car which you won't get from a book or CD.

I don't get what the big hurry is anyway. What's the rush? You'll be having lessons for a good 4/5months anyway.

Just remember that the theory test pass certificate is only valid for 1 YEAR, and it may be taking practical lessons for MORE than 1 year before you pass that.

NO don't do that ! It only lasts for 2 years and you never know what will happen around the corner. I was taking lessons and took my theory later, and it runs out in december, so I have to rush to start my lessons over again - I was doing them, but I had to stop because of money.

Be confident at driving and THEN take your theory x

you can take your theory any time you want, but it's best not too, plus you leanr more as you drive. please take what I said into consideration, I'm kicking myself !

You don't have to have had lessons but you can do so before taking your theory test. Quote:

If you are a learner driver you must take and pass your theory test before you book your practical test. If you already have a driving licence you might not have to take another theory test if you want to start driving a different vehicle.

Yeah, just contact your local test centre. You can do your theory whenever, in some ways its better to do it before having lessons so you are prepared for your lessons.
