Amongst my students, for test prep books, they've been evenly divided between Cliff Notes and Princeton Review as the one they preferred. What you've found, however, is that what works for most people doesn't work for ALL people. If some combo of Barron's and Holtzclaw works for you, then it works for you. I will ask how you're assessing how it "works well." If you find it's making it easier for you to follow along in class and you're doing better on tests, then that's great. If you're not using some kind of objective assessment of your comprehension like tests or quizzes, then it's possible that you could be going for the ones that are simpler for you, but perhaps they don't cover the information in enough depth for you to master it.

Another thing you could add to your mix is the video review course at http://www.brightstorm.com/ap/ap-biology My students love the guy's lectures, they say he does an excellent job at explaining the hardest concepts in AP Biology in an understandable way, and he has a good sense of humor. The guy has been teaching AP Bio for well over a decade and has something like an 80% success rate with 80 or more students. I like the way he emphasizes ways to boost your grade on essays, etc while not losing sight of actually understanding the science. I've actually used a number of the bonus materials as handouts in my own classroom.
