A grade point average, better known as simply a GPA, is a number that reflects one's average grade in all of one's classes (though typically gym and drivers' ed, and sometimes art classes, are not counted). An A is a 4, a B is a 3, a C is a 2, a D is a 1, and an F is a 0 (Your school may not use this same grading system. Basically, each successive letter below A denotes a minimum grade 10% lower than that of the previous letter. A, for example, is a grade of 90%-100%).

There are two types: weighted and unweighted. Unweighted is simply what I've said above, but weighted involves adding points for difficult classes, making it possible to get a GPA of above 4.0, though different schools add different numbers of points. Generally, any honors or AP (Advanced Placement) classes count as difficult, though honors English typically receives as much of a bonus as AP Biology.
