I tend to take a long time to write essays, so how can I effectively manage my time in writing the essays, especially the DBQ? Also, is a lot of outside knowledge required for the DBQ?
Please provide any tips you can. Thanks!

I also take a long time to write essays. I've heard that the DBQ is actually the essay that requires the least background info. because they basically give you all that you need right there on the test. My teacher's suggestion for the DBQ was this: Skim over each of the short doc. they give you to get a general idea of each of them. Then, separate them into groups according to the similarities (since there are 9, put about 3 per group). Read them over more carefully, but don't spend too much time just reading them. Start writing and add quotes as you go.
I know what you mean; it takes me at least 90 minutes to spit out a good essay, and to do it in 40 minutes is going to kill me. It really helps to use a watch or sit up near a clock during the exam to keep track of the time. That's what I'm going to do!
Mainly on the essays you need to focus on the facts, not on making it sound good like on english essays. Actually, the DBQ is usually the easiest one to write and doesn't require as much outside knowledge as the other essays, because they give you documents that pretty much illustrate the information for you; you just have to know how to group them and analyze them correctly. The other 2 essays, however, will just give you a question on a random topic on some random time period in history, and you have know it D:
I'm most nervous about the essays too, so you're not alone! Good luck! :)

i think you have 40 minutes for each essay right? you should plan your essays while you read the prompts during the reading period so writing will go a lot faster. what i do is write down the time that i should be done with each of my essays at the top of my paper so its easier to pace myself. You don't need much outside information for the dbq, but im pretty sure you can get extra points for a lot of outside information...
