I took AP Art History and scored a 5. Here are my tips:

- Get a good textbook like Gardner or Stokstad and take meticulous notes! I liked making two column charts with images on one side, and corresponding details on the other.

- Focus on key pieces that are representative of the style. Learn stylistic features and the techniques the artists used. Know how to apply these features to other art from these periods. Don't go crazy trying to learn all the pieces from every single time period.

- Write, write, write! Write comparative essays about pieces covered in class and research more on your own. Writing about them is the best way to remember the details for the exam.

- Get books to supplement classroom study. The best are REA (with the art images CD) and The Annotated Mona Lisa. The former has more specific tips for the actual exam (Slide Based Questions, art outside the Western tradition, etc.) that you should also look into. Hope I helped!

funny you should mention the test, i'm actually looking for stuff on it now and studying too... i don't have any tips for memorizing slides really but for specific artworks you just need to memorize names and artist names (if applicable) and a general date (meaning, 1950's, late 18th century, etc. not exact dates). you have to know general aspects about the art, like how it fits into a certain genre, or what it's trying to achieve, or its function. knowing extra info helps but if you know these broad things everything else kind of falls into place when you're writing about it. i don't think the short answer or MC are too bad (i've taken a lot of practice tests this year) as long as you know the stuff. otherwise it's going to be hell. if you've never taken another ap test you might think its hard, but compared to other ap classes i don't think it's too bad. i guess what i'm trying to say is just to be calm about it, you seem like a good student and i'm sure you'll do fine. don't bother memorizing every little thing and the test itself isn't too bad as long as you know your stuff. the longer essays require some ability to analyze things but again most of it hinges on your knowledge. if you or anyone else finds any good review sites or anything tonight and could post them, that would be great. i'm trying to study just as hard as you are, and (stupid me) i left my review book at school, great timing right? :) anyway, good luck. i hope what i said helped a little.

I'm going to be a junior with 3 AP classes: AP Art History, AP Language, & AP US History. I'm not dropping any of them, but I just wanted to know how difficult AP Art History really is & what any of you guys got on the exam. I love art. I was born in a family of artists, & my friends even...

I room AP art history my junior year in high school. I had a really bad teacher (she wasted a lot of class time on talking about her ex-husband) but I got a 3 on the exam without really trying. I was only taking one other AP that year, but the test is not that hard. I would also recommend this book called theAnnotated Mona Lisa. My teacher recommended it. I didn't really use it to study too much but I looked at it after the test and it would have been really helpful had I used it to study. It's also just a really cool book. Every class is differnt and it depends on how good your teacher is but I recommend you take the class. If you like art it should be easy :)

You can guess how easy it might be by looking at the score distribution for the AP Art History Exam on collegeboard.com

Here is a link to the results for 2011:

Actually, as long as art history captures your curiosity, you should be able to score a 5 on the test.
